USB over Network and USB for Remote Desktop are easy-to-use applications. The main difference between them is that USB for Remote Desktop is designed to work in remote desktop session, whereas USB over Network is a great tool for sharing a USB device over any TCP/IP network, including with virtual machines.
Both USB for Remote Desktop and USB over Network consists of two parts: one must be installed on the local PC or thin client where USB devices are physically plugged in, other must be installed on the virtual machine.
Local Hyper-V virtual machine
If your Hyper-V virtual machine is running on the local computer and accessed via Hyper-V Manager — USB over Network is your best choice. You need to install USB over Network Server on the host PC and USB over Network Client on the virtual machine.
1. Get USB over Network
Download a free trial copy of USB over Network for your particular OSs.
2. Launch the Installer
Install the downloaded package on both the Host PC and the virtual machine. On the host PC select Server at the 3-rd step of the installation process. On the virtual machine select Client at the 3-rd step as well.
3. Share USB Device on the Host PC
Run USB over Network Server program on the host PC. Select USB device you want to share and click the
button.Now USB device is shared and ready for use by USB over Network Client.
4. Connect USB Device on the Virtual Machine
Run USB over Network Client program on the virtual machine and click
button.Click
to select the host PC, or enter it's name or IP address. Then click . As a result, the specified USB over Network Server will be added to the list of servers. If the server is active at the moment, the program will show a real-time list of USB devices shared on the server.Now, select USB device and click the
button. If the selected device is available on the server, it will be connected to your computer over the network. If the device cannot be connected for some reason, you will see a corresponding message.Now the shared USB device is ready for use on your virtual machine.
Hyper-V via RDP
If your Hyper-V virtual machine is accessed via RDP — USB for Remote Dekstop is the right product for you. USB for Remote Desktop Server should be installed on the virtual machine and USB for Remote Desktop Workstation on the local PC or thin client.
1. Get USB for Remote Desktop
Download a free trial copy of USB for Remote Desktop for your particular OSs.
2. Launch the Installer
Install the downloaded package on both the local computer and the virtual machine. On the local computer select Workstation at the 3-rd step of installation. On the virtual machine select Server at the 3-rd step as well.
3. Log in to Virtual Machine via Remote Desktop
When you login to your remote session, all USB devices on your local computer will be available for connection to the remote virtual machine.
4. Connect a Required USB Device to your Remote Session
Simply click on the USB for Remote Desktop icon in the tray menu in your remote session and select the device from the list.
